Empowering communities through sustainable development
Towards a Better World (TABW) is an Australian-registered charitable organisation dedicated to creating long-term, sustainable change in impoverished communities. Our mission is to empower people to break the cycle of poverty by focusing on economic, social, and environmental sustainability. We focus on grassroots projects that prioritise food security, income generation, and skills development. By fostering a strong sense of community ownership, we ensure that our initiatives are deeply rooted in the needs and visions of the people they serve.
OUR STORY
Towards a Better World was founded in 2017 by Matt and Wendy Napier, whose extraordinary personal commitment to raising awareness about global poverty sparked the foundation of this organisation. Their journey began with Matt undertaking a series of inspiring endurance challenges, where he walked and cycled thousands of kilometres across continents to highlight poverty and raise funds to fight inequality (supported by Wendy all the way!).
In 2012, Matt cycled from Perth to Canberra to campaign against cuts in Australia's foreign aid in suppor of the Make Poverty History campaign.
In 2013, Matt undertook a 4,500 km walk across Australia, bouncing an Aussie Rules football to symbolise resilience and determination. He spoke to schools, community organisations and media along the way to raise awareness of global poverty.
He followed this in 2016 with a 2,300 km walk across Southern Africa, surviving on less than $1.50 a day - the global poverty line at the time - to raise awareness of the challenges faced by millions worldwide. This trek not only demonstrated empathy but also inspired action by engaging schools, businesses and local communities along the way.
After experiencing the extreme inequality in Namibia during his Southern Africa walk, Matt returned in 2017 and walked the length of Namibia from the Orange River to the Kunene, once again kicking a soccerball and giving balls to children along the way.
Matt and Wendy’s vision for TABW was born out of these experiences and their shared belief that sustainable, community-driven solutions are the key to lasting change.
Wendy has been instrumental in shaping the organisation’s mission and ensuring its success. In addition to being Matt's support crew during his walks, managing the admin and behind the scenes details, Wendy continues to be a driving force, inspiring others to join the mission of empowering communities and creating sustainable change. Her passion for sustainability and community empowerment mirrors Matt’s vision, and together they have worked tirelessly to build an organisation that creates meaningful, long-term impact.
OUR VISION
Our mission is to empower communities with the skills and resources needed for self-sufficiency, reducing reliance on external aid. We focus on a grassroots approach, ensuring projects align with the community's vision and needs. By prioritising local aspirations over outside priorities, we create culturally and socially appropriate initiatives.
Our efforts promote sustainable change that empowers the community and fosters ownership, enabling them to improve their living standards without relying on charity. We believe this is the best way to build resilient, self-sufficient communities.
WHERE WE WORK
We have funded projects in Uganda, Malawi, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. However our current focus is in Namibia, where we tackle inequalities and improve livelihoods. Projects include food security initiatives, job creation, and agricultural training designed to promote self-reliance and economic growth.
